From youth hostels to design hotels or luxury establishments where chandeliers, antique furniture and original 19th-century oil paintings abound, Vienna’s lodgings cover it all. In between are homely Pensionen and less ostentatious hotels, plus a small but smart range of apartments.
It’s wise to book ahead at all times. In the winter and autumn low and shoulder seasons (except for Christmas and New Year’s) a day or two is usually sufficient for most places, but for the best value, especially in the centre, a few weeks ahead is advisable. From around Easter to September you will need to book at least several weeks in advance for these places, and some in the centre are booked out a month or more ahead. When you book direct with the hotel, some places require email confirmation following a telephone reservation, but many places are also bookable online. Confirmed reservations in writing are binding, and cancellations within several days of expected arrival often involve a fee or full payment.
Two stars Expect functional rooms costing around €50/90 single/double close to the centre. It’s often better to stay in a hostel.
Three stars Most hotels and Pensionen (guesthouses) are in this category. Expect to pay about €70/130 single/double, less in winter or when booking online. Rooms should be clean, with a decent buffet breakfast, wi-fi, minibar and flat-screen TV and have pleasant showers. Some have bath-tubs.
Four & five stars Rooms in four-star hotels are generally larger than three-star rooms and should have sound insulation and contemporary or quality furnishing; some have wellness facilities. Five-star hotels have premium wellness facilities.
Vienna has a smattering of Jugendherbergen, private hostels or hostels affiliated with Hostelling International (HI). In the former, no membership is required.
Academia Hotels OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 40 176 55; www.academiahotels.at; 08, Pfeilgasse 3a; s/d/tr €62/86/111; rooms Jul-Sep; 46 Strozzigasse) handles bookings for its residences in Vienna (as well as Graz and Salzburg). Book on the website or call well in advance.
The advantage of an apartment is that you have a kitchen and can save on food costs. Most central apartments cost from €120.

Its quiet yet central location, just off the Graben, is hard to beat, staff are exceedingly able, willing and friendly, and children are welcomed with gusto (toys for toddlers and high chairs for tots are available). Tiny palatial touches (shiny marble, polished brass, white-and-gold wallpaper) are distinctly Viennese, but nonetheless a casual feel prevails. Rooms are fitted with Jugendstil (art nouveau) furniture and art (including many prints by Klimt).

Suites are filled with 19th-century paintings and genuine antique furniture (and come with butler service), while 4th- and 5th-floor rooms in Biedermeier style are far cosier and may come with a balcony.
DAS TRIEST HOTEL $$$
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP( 589 18; www.dastriest.at; 04, Wiedner Hauptstrasse 12; s/d €229/296; ; Karlsplatz, Kettenbrückengasse) This Sir Terence Conran creation is a symbiosis of history and modern design. The 300-year-old former stables is now a cutting-edge hotel, with an overall nautical theme; portholes replace spy holes and windows, and stairwell railings would be at home on the Queen Mary 2 . Rooms reveal a clean aesthetic and muted tones, with little touches like fresh flowers polishing the scene off.
On the ground floor is Restaurant Collio (Click here), serving Italian food and centered on a pretty inner courtyard.
Ever fancied having a friend who lives right in the heart of Vienna? Well, Chez Cliché ( 943 69 48; www.chezcliche.com; d €169-239; ) is the next best thing. In tune with the ‘live like a local’ zeitgeist, you can now stay in the home of a fictional Viennese friend in one of eight uberstylish apartments, decorated with a mishmash of design pieces and flea-market finds. They are scattered across the city, from the Innere Stadt’s backstreets to student-flavoured Alsergrund.
Each apartment has been designed with a razor-sharp eye for detail to reflect a specific persona. Sophie, the botanist’s pad, for instance, has medicinal plants and kitchen herbs in the kitchen, floral dresses hanging on rails, wellies and plenty of pot plants. Beat, the music freak, has hip white-walled digs complete with a disco ball and record player. Or you could opt to stay in the contemporary, art-slung home of Koloman, the theatre buff, the gracefully art nouveau abode of Therese, the classical music enthusiast, or the travel-themed apartment of Bella, the flight attendant.

( 406 51 74; www.pension-wild.com; 08, Lange Gasse 10; s €41-69, d €53-90, tr €114; Rathaus, Volkstheater) Wild is one of the few openly gay-friendly Pensionen in Vienna, but the warm welcome extends to all walks of life. The top-floor ‘luxury’ rooms are simple yet appealing, with light-wood furniture and private bathrooms, and are a big advantage over Wild’s other two categories. All, however, are spotlessly clean and kitchens are there for guests to use.

The individually decorated rooms are charming and quirky (without being overcooked), with high ceilings, plenty of space and natural light.
The devil is in the detail here: from the free afternoon tea with homemade cakes to the lavish breakfast with salmon, antipasti and Sekt, and an open fire where you can nurse a glass of red. Staff bend over backwards to please – whatever you need, just say the word.

The groovy Dreimeta-designed rooms are decked out in bold colours, with big-top-style murals, pod-shaped rugs and welcome touches such as iPod docking systems.

Some rooms peer out onto the inner courtyard space.
The hotel offers wine tastings in its chandelier-lit bar, and excursions to Austria’s nearby winegrowing regions. Wine is also a theme at breakfast (€17), with wine-based cheese, preserves and cakes alongside a tempting array of mueslis, fruit, fish and cold cuts.

Don’t be surprised if you encounter a burgeoning rock star in the reception lounge, which doubles as a library. Rooms are basic, with blood-red carpets, full-length curtains and deep colours creating a warm feel.

Set amid the neatly tended vines and Heurigen (wine taverns) of Neustift, this country Pension features wood-panelled ceilings, folk art, ornamental carpets and warm tiled floors, and all staff don traditional garb. The huge buffet breakfast, taken in the secluded garden on warm mornings, makes you feel far, far away from anything urban…but you’re only a 30-minute bus ride from the city centre.

ALTWIENERHOF HOTEL $$
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP( 892 60 00; www.altwienerhof.at; 15, Herklotzgasse 6; s €50-65, d €89-99, q €125; ; Gumpendorfer Strasse) This pseudo-plush family-run hotel, just outside the Gürtel ring, offers ridiculously romantic abodes that hark back to a bygone era. Miniature chandeliers, antique pieces, floral bed covers and couches, and lace tablecloths do a fine job of adding a touch of old-fashioned romance. Breakfast is taken either in the conservatory or in the large inner courtyard on summer days.
